As the ship returned to where the boats were waiting, Jack called Thom to see if he could sell the boats. Thom said he'd have to get back to get back to them. Giggy and Rainbow also tried to get through to their fixers. Giggy couldn't get through, but Rainbow could. John could line up a buyer immediately if the boats were in Australia, but they were all seeing getting them there from New Zealand as a problem.
A couple of hours after sunset, Jack called Thom again, but he was still looking.
Giggy called Sonny and let him know the situation. Sonny called Trinny, who called Giggy back. He could round up buyers in New Guinea, or Malaysia, or in Australia, he could get them picked up in Melbourne or Adelade, or maybe even Brisbane on short notice, but he didn't have contacts in new Zealand.
Giggy called Connie to see if she knew someone with a chopper so they could try to get the boats onto the ship, rather than having to drag them around. Che said she'd have to check around for someone in their area.
At Giggy's suggestion, they decided that if they had to wait more than another 24 hours, thew were best off to just scuttle the boats and return to Sydney.
At 7 the next morning Thom called Jack. He had a buyer in Dunedan if they could get there between 2:30 and 3:00 the next morning. they took the offer, and after several hours of sailing in circles, Lil'D set a definitive course.
They headed south along the west coast of the north island of New Zealand and then through the Cook Straight, As they were leaving the Straight, a coast guard cutter came out of some hidden cove and started approaching from astern.
As the cutter approached the ship, they called for identification and port of call.
Lil'D reported that they were headed south to Port Chalmers, but the coast guard instructed her to heave to so they could inspect the boats in tow.
Three men from the cutter climbed up onto the ship, and talked to Lil'D about the boats. She went and got Jack, informing them that he had spotted the boats adrift and they had collected them, in the condition they are in.
Jack went with the coast guard on their cutter and dropped back to the boats. When they asked Jack where they found the boats, he explained to them that the ocean all looks the same when you're not driving...
The coast guard returned to the ship and gave Lil'D the salvage paperwork, reminding her that she should have put in at the first port to file, and instructed her to deliver the paperwork when she arrived at Port Chalmers.
Lil'D started again, heading south as the cutter returned to the straight.
